Have you ever tried to SAY all the right words during a high stakes #negotiation or challenging discussion with your partner, but somehow, the END RESULT turned out disastrous?🤯
Back in 1967, psychologist Dr. Albert Mehrabian from the University of California, cited based on research, that 7% of #communication is conveyed by our #words, 38% comes via our #toneofvoice, and 55% comes through #bodylanguage. 💡This rule is important and very useful because by learning how to apply the 7-38-55 rule in a negotiation situation, it will help you understand what your negotiating partners are communicating and better control your own messaging, thus resulting in a more fruitful #conversation. However, it is important to note as Mehrabian explained on his own website, "Total Liking = 7% Verbal Liking + 38% Vocal Liking + 55% Facial Liking" and other similar equations were derived from experiments specifically focused on the communication of #feelings and attitudes (i.e., like-dislike). The bottom line is Mehrabian's rule applies only to FEELINGS, not factual content. And it only works when DIFFERENT SIGNALS are in conflict. The good news is, this encompasses a whole lot of situations that are really, really important in life. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever tried this rule before? What other #communicationtips have helped you achieve a calm and impactful conversation during challenging moments? Truly, Trish ➳ 💙Want to make a successful CAREER CHANGE? 5 Behaviours Of People Who Never Give Up25/2/2024 I believe we can all agree, that LIFE isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. Occasionally, it’s hurricanes and tsunamis.
But rather than hide away and wait for the bad times to pass, some people persist through the madness and keep their eye on the prize, irregardless of the #challenges or #failure they faced. What is their secret? Here are the 5 behaviours of people who #nevergiveup in life and keep pushing forward: 1 They set goals that become their #mission Don’t set goals that are vague, uncertain, and distant. People who never give up in life have a MISSION. They know what they’re trying to accomplish and keep their eye on the prize. When they face an obstacle, they’re more motivated to dodge it. 2 They cultivate #discipline 💪 #Losingweight requires motivation; keeping it off requires discipline 💪Picking up a new habit requires motivation; sticking with it requires discipline See a pattern? People who never give up in life don’t just rely on #motivation to get things done. They cultivate a high level of #selfdiscipline to build #routines and systems that keep them on track when that initial motivation dwindles. 3 They #reframe People who never give up have a knack for reframing situations, meaning - to redirect their attention away from the negative aspects of a situation and toward its more constructive elements. 4 They practice #selfcompassion ✨Acknowledge our shortcomings and take things easy when the going gets tough ✨Prioritize our physical, emotional, and #mentalwellbeing ✨Trust our instincts and have #confidence in our abilities to #succeed ✨#Setboundaries and stand up for ourselves when the situation calls for it ✨#Askforhelp when we get #overwhelmed 5 They don’t compare themselves to others Enough said😉 What other behaviours have you seen displayed by people who #dontgiveup? Do you ever find yourself rambling on during a conversation or struggling to get your point across clearly and succinctly? Whether you’re in a business meeting, job interview, or casual #conversation, the ability to speak more concisely is a valuable skill.
Speaking concisely is important for a variety of reasons in our professional and personal life. If we are able to get our message across in a clear and concise manner, we are more likely to be perceived as knowledgeable and #confident. Finally, speaking concisely can help to avoid misunderstandings and miscommunications in our personal relationships. Ready to learn the art of speaking concisely? 3 Steps To Speak Up When It Matters12/12/2023 SPEAKING UP is hard to do😶 Would you #speakup if you saw something ethically questionable? Run up against offensive speech? Disagree with an opinion that’s all too quickly become consensus?
While we’d all like to think we'd say something in these situations, but #research suggests that most people tend to NOT act, and then rationalize their #inaction. But we’re not really doing our job — as a diligent employee, #compassionate colleague, or thoughtful #leader — if we don’t speak up when it matters. So what can we do? First, realize how psychologically difficult — and worthwhile — speaking up can be. Research on “#realisticoptimism” shows that when people set out to do difficult, personally meaningful things, they’re more likely to follow through if they expect that the task will be challenging. In speaking up, as in life, one must appreciate the difference between BELIEVING you will #succeed and ASSUMING that you will do so easily. Second, try to lessen the social threat that speaking up creates. Social motivation comes in 5 flavors: #Status, certainty, #autonomy, relatedness, and #fairness. When you speak up to someone, any one of these 5 buttons might be pushed, but most commonly it’s STATUS, especially when you’re communicating up the chain of command. Make it clear that you’re not attributing ill will to the person or people you might be speaking about. Show that you are providing feedback on impact, without making any assumptions about intent. Third, #makeaplan. Though you won’t be able to predict the specifics of every situation, creating a plan for how to speak up can significantly increase the likelihood that you do so when the moment presents itself. What other strategies have helped you to speak up when it matters the most? Truly, Trish ➳ 💙 Want to make a successful CAREER CHANGE? Do you live by ROUTINES or PRACTICES?🤔 #Routines are often critical to #success. Breaking a goal down into daily activities and then consistently performing those activities, day in and day out. Until something disrupts that routine…
The more rigidly you follow a routine, the more likely a single broken link will disrupt the entire chain. How can we keep that from happening? The key, is to turn a routine into a #PRACTICE. Routine: Going for a run every day at 05:00am. [If it rains, your routine is ruined] ✅ Practice: Exercising every day [If it is raining, you can change it up by going to a gym or doing workouts at home] Routine: Eating an apple every morning. [Since you didn’t go for a run, so you sleep in, neglect eating anything or hydrating your body] ✅ Practice: Eating healthy [No more apples? You change it up by eating something else that is also healthy] Routine: Holding an all-hands Zoom meeting every day at 09:00am. [If the internet is down, the meeting is missed, you wait for the next day] ✅ Practice: Whether the meeting is held or not, you regularly check in with your team to see if they need help, guidance, or a quick word of encouragement. When something happens to mess up your routine, don’t dwell on the WHAT, think about the WHY and HOW. Focus on the goal your routine helps you achieve and be open to the WAY it is executed to get there. Routines are NOT who you are, they are simply what you CHOOSE to do. A kink in your routine cannot change who you are, and more importantly - who you hope to become, unless you let it. Have a great week ahead🌻 Truly, Trish ➳ 💙 Want to make a successful CAREER CHANGE? Although it’s impossible to predict the future, we can however, learn how to manage the UNCERTAINTIES that come along with #change.
The #WilliamBridges Transition Model provides a roadmap through the emotional landscape of change. The model identifies three phases: ↠ Ending What Currently Is ↠ The #Transition Zone ↠ The New Beginning As you move from one ending, and just before you start a new beginning, you will find yourself in a transition period, or the ‘neutral zone’. In between a period of change, it takes time for the transition to occur. During the transition zone, you can feel a lot of mixed emotions. It can feel confusing, frightening, and overwhelming. You may feel #selfdoubt, unbalanced, lost, or numb. But guess what? That’s completely normal. Uncertainty is a natural part of any adjustment period. 5 Types of Nonverbal Communication - Part 214/11/2023 In my last post (part 1), we learned 5 different types of #NONVERBALCOMMUNICATION💡 In this post (part 2), we’re gonna have a look at 5 more that you can use to up your game in communicating with others.
💡 1 #Haptics (Touch) Touch can be used to communicate affection, familiarity, #sympathy, and other #emotions. 💡 2 #Appearance Our choice of clothing, hairstyle, and other appearance factors. #Research on #colorpsychology shows that different colors can evoke different moods. Appearance can also alter physiological reactions, judgments, and interpretations. Researchers have found that appearance can even play a role in how much people earn🤑 Attractive people tend to #earnmore and receive other fringe benefits, including higher-quality jobs. 💡 3 Chronemics (#Punctuality) The role 'time' plays during communication. How people interpret time can be personal, cultural, or have to do with their power or #status. If a friend is late, maybe you'll feel annoyed by their lack of #timemanagement. Now imagine if your boss showed up 15 minutes late to a meeting. You might be more understanding of their busy schedule. 💡 4 #Physiological responses Your body naturally sends out nonverbal signals that are nearly impossible to control. This includes nervous sweating, blushing, or tearing up. 💡 5 #Artifacts (Objects, etc) Objects and images are also tools that can be used to communicate nonverbally. Eg: On an online forum, you might select an avatar to represent your identity and to communicate information about who you are and the things you like. Personally, the point about appearances made me really think. What about you? Happy Tuesday everyone🌻 Truly, Trish ➳ 💙 Want to make a successful CAREER CHANGE?
