Don’t Wait for the Right Opportunity to Come—Create It.

How many times have we found ourselves waiting for that "perfect opportunity" to knock on our door? Maybe it’s a promotion we think we deserve, or a project we hope will come our way. We wait, we hope, and sometimes we wonder if it will ever happen.

But here’s a truth that took me years to realize: we can’t always wait for the right opportunity to show up—we need to create it ourselves.

The reality is, opportunities rarely come to those who simply wait for them. If we want to see growth in our careers, whether it's a leadership role, a dream project, or even a side hustle that could become something bigger, we must be the ones to make the first move. It’s not always easy, and it doesn’t always look like we expect it to, but creating our own opportunities is often the key to unlocking our full potential.

Here’s how we can create our own opportunities:
  1. Don’t be afraid to take the first step.
It’s easy to think that someone will offer us a golden ticket, but chances are, we will need to build that ticket ourselves. Whether it’s taking on a new project at work, learning a new skill, or reaching out to someone we admire--the first step is always the hardest. But it’s also the most important.
  2. Make connections before you need them.
We all know networking is crucial, but it’s easy to neglect it when we’re not actively looking for a job. Don’t wait until you need something to start building relationships. Make connections with people who inspire us, share our values, and can help us grow. When opportunities arise, those relationships will be the foundation we can lean on.
  3. Look for gaps and fill them.
Sometimes, the best opportunities aren’t the ones we’ve been waiting for, but the ones we create by identifying gaps around us. Is there a problem in your organization, team, or community that hasn’t been addressed yet? If we spot it, there’s a chance for us to step up and take charge. Innovation doesn’t wait for permission; it’s born out of action.
  4. Embrace failure as part of the journey.
Waiting for the right opportunity often feels like playing it safe, but playing it safe doesn’t lead to growth. We have to be willing to take risks and fail, over and over again, to create the opportunities we want. Failure is simply feedback that helps us learn, adjust, and move forward stronger.
  5. Be proactive, not reactive.
Waiting for opportunities means we’re reacting to the world around us. Instead, let’s take charge of our careers by being proactive. Set goals, identify milestones, and work toward them every single day. Whether it’s learning a new skill or taking on a leadership role, we can always find ways to shape our own paths.

The truth is, we can’t wait around for the world to hand us success. We need to grab it ourselves. And while the journey of creating our own opportunities may seem daunting at times, it’s ultimately far more rewarding than waiting for someone else to create our future for us.

Let’s be the ones who see possibilities instead of roadblocks. Let’s be the ones who stop waiting and start creating. Because when we take charge of our own destinies, we unlock a world of opportunities—ones we never imagined were possible.

I'm ready to create the future that I want. Are you?

What will you create today?

Truly,
Trish
