The Power of Choosing What’s Best Over What’s Easy: How Making Tough Decisions Leads to Long-Term Success

8/12/2024

In today’s fast-paced world, the temptation to take the easy route is everywhere. Whether it’s at work, in relationships, or in personal growth, convenience often calls to us like a siren song. But the truth is, success and fulfillment rarely come from taking the shortcut. They come from doing what’s best for us—even when it’s difficult, inconvenient, or uncomfortable.

The Trap of Convenience

It’s human nature to seek comfort and avoid discomfort. But this desire for ease can hold us back in significant ways. In our careers, for example, the “easy” choice might be sticking with the status quo—doing what we’ve always done, following the same routines, and avoiding challenging opportunities that could require more effort.

While this may feel safe in the short term, it often results in stagnation. When we choose what’s easy, we miss out on the growth and development that comes from facing challenges head-on. Comfort zones may feel nice, but they’re not where growth happens.

What’s Best vs. What’s Easy

Choosing what’s best for you often means stepping into discomfort. It might involve taking on a project you’re unsure about, having a difficult conversation, or pushing yourself to develop a new skill. These decisions are hard, but they are the ones that lead to long-term success.

When you do what’s best for you, you prioritize your growth, your values, and your future. The “best” choice might be saying no to the easy path and yes to something that requires more effort, time, or risk. It’s about looking beyond the immediate gratification and thinking about where you want to be in the long run.

The Cost of Avoiding the Hard Work

There’s a real cost to always choosing convenience. When we take the path of least resistance, we forgo the possibility of reaching our true potential. Think about it: What opportunities have you passed up because they felt too risky? What dreams have you delayed because they seemed too difficult to pursue?

The cost isn’t just about missed opportunities—it’s about the erosion of our confidence, our sense of purpose, and our ability to trust ourselves. The more we choose the easy way, the more we reinforce the idea that we can’t handle challenges. But in reality, we are capable of far more than we give ourselves credit for.

How to Make the Best Choice

So how do you start choosing what’s best for you, even when it’s not easy or convenient? Here are a few strategies:

  1. Clarify Your Long-Term Vision: The more clearly you can see the future you want for yourself, the easier it will be to make tough decisions. When faced with a choice, ask yourself: Will this move me closer to my long-term goals?
  2. Embrace Discomfort: Growth always happens outside of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to take on challenges that feel intimidating. Embrace the discomfort, knowing that it’s part of the journey.
  3. Practice Delayed Gratification: The easy choice may give you immediate satisfaction, but the best choice will pay off in the long run. Practice delaying gratification and choose what’s best over what’s easy.
  4. Build Resilience: Every time you push through difficulty, you build resilience. The more you make choices that are hard but rewarding, the stronger you become—mentally and emotionally.
  5. Surround Yourself with Support: Sometimes, doing what’s best for you can feel isolating. Find mentors, friends, or colleagues who encourage and support you as you take the harder path. You don’t have to do it alone.

Conclusion: The Road Less Traveled

The easy route may look appealing, but it’s the harder road—the one that challenges you and forces you to grow—that leads to the greatest rewards. Do what’s best for you, not what’s easy and convenient. In doing so, you’ll not only reach your goals but also build a life that reflects your true potential.
Remember: Success isn’t about avoiding challenges; it’s about overcoming them. The best decisions may not always be the most convenient ones, but they’re the ones that will get you where you want to go.

Always believing in you,
Trish
