Routines can be stable and comforting, but they can also turn stale and confining over time. All those inspirational messages telling you to break out of your comfort zone aren’t just trying to sell you bungee cords. Did you know that doing something new and potentially frightening helps stave off burnout and is good for your brain?
Still, it’s pretty hard to shake yourself out of a routine, and there’s plenty of science explaining why—and how to do it. Today, I'm gonna be sharing with you my top 3 tips that helps me break out of my comfort zone like a pro every time I get afraid to take that first step.
#1 DARE TO BEGIN BEFORE YOU'RE READY
After I moved to Germany back in 2015, I joined a German-speaking company roughly about a year later before I fully understood German. Secretly I was expecting a "no", but surprisingly, they hired me anyway.
They said they saw the skill sets and experience that I have was valuable to their company.
Was I scared shitless if I would disappoint them and myself? Hell yes.
But, I took on the job anyway.
Was the learning curve steep at the beginning? Yes, I won't lie. However, it also pushed me to speak the language and my learning speed accelerated because of that.
#2 DREAM BIG BUT TAKE SMALL STEPS
A little anxiety is good for you. But as neuroscientists have researched, when healthy anxiety becomes overwhelming stress, it can impact your mental health negatively.
It's ok to dream big, in fact, it helps pushes you to go after goals that you may have thought were beyond your reach.
But let's say your goal is to take part in a triathlon. Don't just sign up for it and then expect to win if you haven't been laying some solid basics for yourself in terms of your stamina and core strength. Not saying you can't, but realistically speaking, the odds would not be in your favor as compared to those that have been training nonstop for months or years on end.
If you've never done a triathlon before, then of course just thinking about it could scare you from taking that first step!
Plan what steps you can take to make you feel more confident incrementally about achieving the goal in mind.
The first step of this goal would probably to go for runs around your neighborhood for X kms and within X amount of time.
Then as you build up strength and stamina, consider joining a marathon.
Once you've achieved that, thinking about joining a triathlon won't seem so scary or impossible anymore isn't it? ;)
Take time to build up your skills or strength over time, that way, giant leaps won’t seem quite so big.
#3 TURN YOUR LIMITING BELIEFS INTO CURIOSITY FOR LEARNING
Guess what, those are just voies in your mind that "think" they are doing you a favour to keep you from "harm" and stay within "safe" boundaries.
The false stories in your mind which are setting a ceiling of what you can potentially achieve. By noticing—and then challenging your limiting beliefs lets you break free from your comfort zone and enables bold and courageous change. Remember: Beliefs are not facts.
Rather than scare yourself into staying within your comfort zone, how about turning it into a sense of curiosity on what can you learn to add to your current range of skillsets?
Remember, babies weren't born to know how to walk on the first day. They only know how to do that after about a year or more! Same goes for you and me. Whenever you are trying to do something new, it takes time. You may not want to hear that, but it is true. It is the way we and the world works.
Be patient, be consistent, and stay hungry to continuously learn and grow.
