Let's be real, who doesn't want to be successful? Even I do. But have you ever paused to think for a moment what does success mean to you?
If you've ever had any one of the following thoughts or feelings:
feeling like a failure
feel as if you've achieved nothing in life
think achieving success is near impossible
wondered how do people become successful
what habits do successful people actually practise on a daily basis
Then today's show is a must watch for you.
Feeling 'Stuck' or Frustrated? How Does Certain People Become Successful?
It is good to have healthy goals, and to strive to better ourselves. However, we as humans tend to fall into the social comparison trap. The Social comparison theory was first put forth in 1954 by psychologist Leon Festinger, who hypothesized that we make comparisons as a way of evaluating ourselves. At its root, the impulse is connected to the instant judgments we make of other people—a key element of the brain's social-cognition network that can be traced to the evolutionary need to protect oneself and assess threats.
According to Thomas Mussweiler, a professor of organizational behavior at London Business School, he says, "Inevitably, we relate information about others to ourselves. It's one of the most basic ways we develop an understanding of who we are, what we're good at, and what we're not so good at. It happens not only in a strategic manner, but also spontaneously and automatically whenever we are confronted with others. Even when you're faced with a standard that's extreme, first you compare, then you correct for the outcomes."
The effects of upward and downward comparisons depend on how we process the information. Self-improvement occurs when an upward comparison inspires us to try harder. Self-enhancement can take place when we note our similarities to someone superior (She and I went to the same college!) or play up our differences with someone inferior (He's not as dedicated to his work as am I). And as for the self-hate happens when we compare upward only to note differences that feel insurmountable (She's more beautiful than I'll ever be) or dwell on commonalities with someone we disdain (That loser is unemployed, too).
Good news - you don't have to wonder, feel frustrated or compare yourself to those people you deem 'successful'. You can start to create your own success and a life you love today.
4 Simple SMART Steps To Achieve Your Success
In the video below, you'll be walked through 4 steps which touches on the importance of creating a specific goal, the right mindset needed for the pursuit of success using the strategies from the book The Magic of Thinking Big by David J Schwartz, how our external factors can make a big impact on our attempt in achieving our goals, and lastly, using a S.M.A.R.T. plan to get you towards the success you want.
Time and again, there have been researches done about the effectiveness of goal-setting by using a concrete, well thought out plan, and how it can increase the rate of successfully achieving your goals. A study did by Michigan State University stated that participants with written goals had a 33 percent higher chance of achieving goals as compared to those participants with unwritten goals. Also, an article written by Forbes about goal-setting, Neuropsychologists have identified that people who very vividly describe or picture their goals are anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals. These studies shows the value of taking the time to write down your goals, create an action plan and develop a system of support to hold yourself accountable for achieving your goals.
I understand that it might seem a little daunting at first when you think about having to look at every single specific detail and plan, that's why I created a S.M.A.R.T. goal planner to help you get started. It comes with a step by step how to use a S.M.A.R.T. plan to capture and analyze what course of action you need to take in order to achieve your goals, then without a doubt, your goals will become a reality, and success is yours.
