When naysayers question your dreams, it can feel like a “me against the world” battle. As human beings, we are hardwired with a desire to fit in—to be supported by our peers—which is why a lack of it can feel like a life-or-death situation in our brains.

You know that you have what it takes to succeed, but no one else thinks so. People around you just shake their heads, tell you all the reasons why something won’t work, or their eyes glaze over.

People don’t react the way you hoped they would. The problem is, no one believes you.

What is wrong with everyone?

It turns out, there might be a reason behind their skepticism.

If you’ve experienced feeling like others don’t believe in you, you’re in good company. Read on to gain some insights into why certain people react the way they do, and more importantly, how you can potentially turn them into supporters of your dreams.

Here's the question I received:

Hey Trish,

I have many dreams, goals and plans for my future which I want to achieve, but sadly, my friends and my family don't understand or support them. They think my dreams are unrealistic or too big for me to achieve. Please tell me what should I do? Thanks Trish.

Short answer? Do it anyway.

Because it is your life, not theirs. You only have one life - ONE. Do you really want to spend it by doing only what others believe you can or should do?

We live in a society where we are inundated with people, advertisements, articles, researches, and so on constantly telling us what we should do.

  • You should eat only 2 eggs a day

  • You should buy this brand or that brand because it's the best

  • You should become a lawyer or a doctor to earn lots of money

  • You should do this, or that, or so on and so on.

If you noticed, in all of these sentences there is the word 'should'. Anytime you see that word, remind yourself it's a red flag! It's the world or others telling you how you should think and what you should do, not what you truly want to do or what you know is best for you.

Now for the slightly longer, more elaborate answer, here's a few strategies on what you can do in order to try and turn your friends and family into avid supporters of your dreams:

Strategy #1 Let results speak for itself

If you say they don't understand how it's possible for you to achieve your goals, then help them understand.

By using past successes of others who have done what you're planning to achieve. This shows them that if others have done it before, so can you.

Strategy #2 Master the art of persuasion

At an appropriate time, sit them down and get to the root of why they think or feel the way that they do. Once you understand what exactly are theirs concerns, can you then plan on how to address them. you may successfully turn what was once a non-believer into an avid supporter!

A possible reason why sometimes people we love don't support our goals, is because either they love you so much, that they don't want to risk seeing you fail, and so they tell you to dream small and do what everyone else does to help keep you "safe", or they have a fixed mindset; meaning they believe that their perspective of how people or the world should work, is the one and only way anyone or everything should ever work. They are not willing to learn or understand a new way of doing things. It is just not acceptable them because they are fixed in their thoughts.

Once you understand the view point and concerns of your friends and family, do your due diligence and start doing in-depth research about how successful people have achieved their goals in the past. Use charts, proven research, statistics, and so on to be well prepared to present your case on why you believe your dreams are doable. Show them that you have it all planned out, considered all the possible setbacks, and how to overcome them, thus increasing your chances of achieving your dreams!

Strategy #3 Have unwavering determination to win

Even if what you dream to achieve is not possible at the moment, it doesn't mean that the necessary technology or resources to achieve it would not be made available to make it happen in time to come.

Look at Elon Musk and Steve Jobs. Both of these remarkable people have always construed ideas that some people don’t believe in or might call 'insane'. Both of them have not only delivered, but done so in a beautifully artistic fashion that looks even better than the future we’ve been imagining.

By showing your friends and family your level of determination and commitment to make your dreams work, they would probably be in awe of your tenacity, fire and passion for your dreams, that they will jump onboard your journey towards your dreams, rather than get in your way.

Many exceptional visionaries have endured criticism and rejection, and if other great dreamers and leaders have succeeded in spite of their doubters, then you can, too.

Once you’ve watched, I’d love to hear from you.

How do you deal with non-believers of your dreams? Does it stop you from pursuing your goals? Persuade them? Or go after your dreams anyway because you believe in your dreams?

Share as much detail as you can. Many lovely souls come here for insight and inspiration. Your story may be just what someone else needs to have a major breakthrough.

Remember, whether people believe in you or continue to doubt you, there will always be a sea of negative people telling you why a certain idea won't work. In the end, the only person who needs to truly believe in your dreams to make it happen is you. When you're fiercely determined to achieve your dreams no matter what, no one can make you doubt yourself.

I really hope this helps, and I wish you all the best in your pursuit towards making magic happen ✨

Thank you so much for watching, sharing, and adding your perspective. Live life as you envisioned, and live it to the fullest, for a life filled with regret is one of the worst ways you could live this life which has been blessed upon you. No one can make that decision for you to pursue your dreams or not because they are your dreams. Not anyone else's but yours. Now go crush those dreams of yours.

Live strong, and have courage to create a life you love because your happiness matters.
