HOW TO BOUNCE BACK WHEN THINGS GO WRONG


You know those days when everything seems to go wrong and nothing seems to go right? We’ve all had them, but sometimes, knowing how to deal with them without having a heart attack seems impossible. We want to sort out the problems and find solutions, but when that doesn’t happen as quickly as we’d like, we sometimes panic, take out our anger on someone else, or just run away from our problems. However, none of these methods will really make the day any better; it will simply add to your mounting stress. If you really want to keep a level head when things go wrong, and learn to deal with problems rationally and thoughtfully, you just need to keep a few tips handy.


3 Things I Do When Things Go Wrong


We all have had moments where everything just seems to go foul. Even for myself, I recently got so pushed to the limit when I had a really frustrating time just trying to download a video file from my phone onto my laptop! (This is very important because I needed it for work) What made it worse, was that at the same time, I had other family issues to handle, and my baby girl was having a fever (which meant not sleeping well and lots of crying for no apparent reason involved). Sometimes when it rains, it really pours. My attempt at downloading a simple file may sound so easy peasy, but due to some problems with the file (it was probably corrupted), it took me hours and hours of researching, trying, again and again just to make it work. I even felt like pulling out all my hair and giving up at one point.


If you're feeling like this right now, join me now to calm your mind to gain clarity and focus by taking a slow deep breath in... and exhale slowly. Everything can be figured out.


No matter how bad things may get, no matter how dark the moment may seem, even if your whole world feels like it has turned over upside down and nothing fits, remind yourself that you always have the power to choose what you make of it - and that, is your superpower.



Sometimes when things go wrong and we're drowned too deeply in problems, we might lose sight of how we can dig ourselves out of a rough patch without first driving ourselves crazy or losing control over our emotions. Without the ability to constructively pull ourselves out of the moment, we might drown even further into our frustrations and sadness; as if we were stuck in quick sand.


Here's the good news - you can deal with any given unfavourable situation with a sense of calm, without feeling suffocated, and to come out of it stronger and wiser. Though it is near impossible to prevent plans from not going your way from ever happening again, it is however, possible to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally to deal with setbacks effectively as and when they do come.


3 Rs To Deal With Situations That Don't Go Your Way Like A Pro


In the video below, you'll be walked through my 3 Rs that has helped me time again during my most challenging moments. Whenever things fall apart for me, and somehow nothing I do seems to make the situation better, here's my steps:


#1 Refresh

Rather than trying to push aside your feelings or continuously attempting whatever it is you are trying to get done, how about take a moment to acknowledge your emotions, be mindful of how you feel, and shift your focus onto something else to give your mind and body some time to refresh.


Whether you try square breathing, laughter yoga, going for a walk, anything to shift your focus off of the problem for awhile, it'll help invite some new energy and strength into your mind. If you need to take a pillow and scream out all your frustrations, just do it! If not, it’ll only make things worse. Don’t bottle up your frustration because it’s not healthy to do so. It’s like putting a lid on a pot of boiling water — the heat and pressure will only increase. Soon it’ll explode, and you wouldn't want that to happen.


#2 Reevaluate

With a calmer mind, come back to the problem, reevaluate your situation or goal.


Evaluate what went wrong, ask yourself what have you learned from it, and how you can possibly do better? What new strategies can you try in order to make it work?


Research, brainstorm, and plot out new different strategies to try.


#3 Retry

Have patience and courage to try again!


But before attempting again, I’d like to share with you excerpts from a poem called "Thinking", written by the famous poet Walter D. Wintle (see full poem at the end of the post):


"If you like to win, but you think you can’t,

It is almost certain you won’t.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man.

But soon or late the man who wins,

Is the man who thinks he can."


So believe you can, visualize yourself accomplishing your goals, and you’ve already won half the battle! 😃


I'd like to point out that if things still go wrong after several attempts or nothing improves, all is not lost! Then either:

  • you may not have the necessary resources or skills yet to achieve what you want, and you may need external advice or help

  • maybe it is not the right time for you to achieve the goal you want to achieve now. But, with the right amount of determination, dedication, persistence, and willingness to keep learning new knowledge and skills, anything is possible.

Don't give up, but do be patient and practise having faith - everything will work out in good time. Trying and failing is not failure, but failing to try it. Sometimes when things don't happen exactly the way you want it to, it may just be the Universe's way of leading you towards something better.
