You try hard, but that scale won't budge. It's only human nature to wonder if those pounds will ever come off. To make matters worse, if you suffer from emotional eating, then achieving your health goals becomes all the more challenging and frustrating.
But don't raise the white flag and chuck your diet plans just yet. I have been on both ends of the stick - being overweight and underweight (anorexia). It took me a long time to finally find a way to not only lose weight mindfully but also to keep the weight off. If you're ready to learn how I did, watch today's episode now:
Super important news : Read on to find out how you can get a FREE Food Journal
Do you find yourself eating more than usual? Especially now with being cooped up at home, or maybe you lost your job (which I'm sorry if you did), having low motivation, and all you can think of is food???
I'm guilty of this too! So don't beat yourself up.
One of the things about my past which I never really opened up to anyone until now is about my battle with eating.
As I mentioned above, I've been on both ends of the stick. When I was really young, since I was about 12 years old, I constantly overate because I suffered from low self-esteem due to the harsh racism I faced at school on a daily basis. Back then, food was my only friend that gave me comfort and never judged me (well, it felt good while I was eating anyway).
Then when I was about 18 years old, I started to take care of my weight a little more. I didn't pig out as much and I started to exercise. I also started to care lesser about what people thought about me. That gave me emotional freedom and my self-confidence started to slowly grow.
THE TURNING POINT
In 2011, when I was about 22, a model scout approached me and told me that I should consider joining a beauty pageant. She said I had the height and looks for it.
Frankly, I was very humbled to receive her compliment and encouragement, however, I didn't believe I had it in me to win. I thought to myself - how in the world could I possibly be accepted into such a prestigious event, competing with so many beautiful women?
It took me a good 1 year to finally convince myself to join and just see how things went.
To my pleasant surprise, I made it to the finals of the Miss Universe Malaysia pageant. After I lost at the finals and came out of the competition, I drowned in low self-esteem again. The judges penalized me that I didn't know how to pose and there were people commenting on social media (and at my workplace) that I wasn't thin enough and that they had no idea how I could make it to the finals in the first place.
The result of all this criticism? I started to undereat and was determined to be "skinny". I calculated my calories so much to a point that I was anorexic.
Both sides, being overweight or underweight weren't fun, nor good for my health.
UNDERWEIGHT TO OVERWEIGHT (AGAIN)
In 2018, I gained over 24 pounds from my prepregnancy weight. Below is a photo of me at 9 months pregnant:
After giving birth, thankfully I was able to mindfully lose all my baby weight within 10 months. That was all thanks to the mindful tips I've learned the hard way in life.
I've come a long way from my unhealthy relationship with food and now I have much better control over my urge to eat mindlessly or to punish myself by starving myself. I completely understand the struggle one faces when you're trying to eat mindfully, achieve balance in your life, and achieve a healthy weight. It ain't easy peasy.
That is why I have compiled all my experience and knowledge into my book The Path To Emotional Eating Freedom.
In this book, I share about what triggers a person to become an emotional eater, why it can become addictive, and most importantly - 21 mindful tips on how to overcome emotional eating and build a healthy relationship with food.
To give you a sneak preview into the book, one of the tips I share in this book, is about how many people believe there is an "ultimate" diet plan that works for everyone.
Many people say this or that diet works, maybe, but truth is, there isn't any one-size-fits-all solution!
Research has shown that even twins don't have the same kind of metabolism. This means, what might work for person A, may not work for person B. What might work for you, may not work for me.
I've tried countless diets and honestly, there really is no perfect solution.
The low carb diet? Tried. My weight didn't budge. Meals weren't as pleasurable.
The Keto diet? Tried. It made me gain weight.
The Vegan diet? I tried it for a year. Not bad, I felt my skin glow. But my weight didn't really budge.
and the list goes on...
I'm not saying these diets aren't good, all I'm saying is, what works for one, may not work for another.
DIET STRATEGIES WHICH WORK FOR ME
For me, I currently use a combination of the following methods to achieve and maintain my ideal weight.
1) The 80/20 diet (mindfully eat healthy 80% of the time and 20% whatever you like)
2) Semi-fasting (I don't eat anything between 5 pm to 6 am the next morning)
This combo works perfectly for me.
Apart from implementing these methods, there are also other mindful tips which help to support my journey of maintaining my healthy weight easily.
My dear friends, if you'd like to know more about all the tips that have helped turn my life around for the better, and if
